Abstract Today’s world described by Zygmunt Bauman as “Liquid Times” is subject to frequent and major transformations. Poland, as a part of the world"s economy, is also undergoing constant social and economic modernization. Part of this change is an adaptation of risk recognition and an assessment in the management of enterprises. It is essential in the context of social and economic volatility and results in an urge for modernization on the macro and mezo levels as well as understanding the role of individuals in this process. The aim of the essay is to present the new institutionalism as a theory linking enterprises and individuals, and in this context to identify the selected institutional theory aspects providing dimensions for institutional enterprise development and risk management as a particular instance of the theory. Analysis is performed within the framework proposed by the works of Douglas C. North, Elinor Ostrom and Piotr Chmielewski.
