Abstract The article contains reflections on the impact of consumption on the development of a knowledge society. These considerations are based on bringing the essence of the knowledge society, the conditions and factors shaping that society. Consumption is shown as an important factor in the development of the knowledge society, seen as an investment in human and social capital. Its traditional, as well as new roles are presented, including: the driving force of development, motivator and social activity, an indicator of social position. The article also characterises the „loading” of consumption, especially the phenomenon of consumerism, as a factor hampering heading for a knowledge society with sustainable development and sustainable consumption.
