Abstract A comparison of index figures for Poland and developed countries such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Great Britain are presented. Among other things, it is illustrated that in Poland the number of universities per million inhabitants is the highest,the number of students is also great, but the number of scientists is significantly lower although it is increasing slightly in contrast to other countries. Despite being on 20th position in the world in terms of the number of citable publications (SCOPUS database) and contrary to general trends of cooperation, we now observe a decline in the number of joint publications with foreign scientists. At the same time, some scientific disciplines lowered their positions in the SCOPUS rankings. Increase of funds for science and higher education, incentives for international cooperation, and massive investments in modern scientific infrastructure in conjunction with demographic change (decrease in the number of students) can reverse these negative trends.
