Abstract The statement that artificial intelligence is gradually gaining popularity is becoming outdated. AI already appears to be ubiquitous, including as one of the key topics in contemporary debates on its impact on society and ethics. Today, no one—including former sceptics—can deny that this technology has enormous, and as yet undefined, potential to transform various areas of life such as healthcare, education, the economy, and public administration, while at the same time generating numerous dilemmas and controversies. Will artificial intelligence come to dominate our reality? Will life without it still be possible? Will humans be able to control the expansion of this technology, or will it instead subordinate humanity and its existing way of life? The questions posed—far beyond the community of AI researchers—are many. One fact seems to unite all perspectives: artificial intelligence constitutes a major challenge. Meeting this challenge must take into account human needs and ethical principles.
